146: OSHA, Outside Consultants, and Business Development – Nelva Smith

Nelva Smith is a labor and employment attorney with Steptoe & Johnson PLLC in Columbus, Ohio. From general day-to-day counseling, to litigation, workers’ compensation, and safety and health issues, Ohio employers of all sizes rely on Nelva for employment law guidance.

As a member of the firm’s Workplace Safety Team, she has defended employers in front of the Industrial Commission on a variety of issues that arise out of Ohio workers compensation matters. She also has experience in safety and health issues, with an emphasis on OSHA. She has presented on several occasions nationally on OSHA topics, and she has twice been a contributing editor to the national treatise on Occupational Safety and Health Law. Nelva has experience defending employers in general employment litigation, charges before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, charges before the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, charges before the National Labor Relations Board, and defending OSHA citations, and she has also successfully handled wage and hour audits before a state government agency. In addition to her employment experience, Nelva is also on the firm’s Higher Education Team and actively represents several universities and colleges in the region against Title IX litigation.

Julian___Lee___Headshot_CA4112_635890127800592177Julian T. Lee is an associate in Rosenberg Martin Greenberg’s nationally recognized tax controversy department. He joined the firm in 2009, and his practice focuses on representation of individuals and businesses throughout all stages of federal and state tax controversies.

Julian is Vice Chair of the National Bar Association (NBA) Tax Section and has frequently spoken on panels about income and employment tax compliance at NBA conferences. He is an active member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation and a member of the Maryland State Bar Association. Julian has served as an instructor in the Military Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at Fort George G. Meade since 2012, teaching preparers who provide free tax preparation services to military personnel and their families. He also volunteers as a Maryland Volunteer Legal Services Associate Advocate and was recognized as a Maryland Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2014 and 2015. He received a Young Lawyer/Future History Maker award from the Monumental City Bar Association in 2015.

Julian is a graduate of Emory University and earned his J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he served as an editorial board member of the Moot Court Honor Society. Julian received his LL.M. in Taxation with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center.
