103: Leadership for Lawyers – Mark Beese

beesejpg-126x150Mark Beese is President of Leadership for Lawyers, LLC, a consultancy focused on helping lawyers and other professionals become better leaders and business developers. He provides training, coaching and consultation to firms in the areas of leadership development, business development and marketing. His clients range from small, single office firms to global Amlaw 100 firms.

He is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management. In 2014 he was inducted into the Legal Marketing Association Hall of Fame, one of only 22 leaders to have received that honor.

He is currently Chair of the Lawyer Leadership Group of the American Bar Association, Law Practice Management Division. He is also a professional member of the International Leadership Association, the National Speakers Association, the Legal Marketing Association and the College of Law Practice Management.

Mark has more than 25 years of experience as a chief marketing officer for professional services firms. He has served as Chief Marketing Officer for Holland & Hart, a 450-attorney law firm based in Denver, Director of Marketing for the New York law firm of Hodgson Russ, and Director of Marketing for Kideney Architects in Buffalo, NY.

102: How to Foster Individual and Practice Group Business Development – Kathleen Cannon

Kathy Cannon is managing partner of Kelley Drye’s Washington, D.C. office and former chair of the International Trade and Customs practice group. With more than 30 years of experience in international trade law, Ms. Cannon focuses her practice on assisting domestic industries that are experiencing injury due to unfairly traded imports, primarily through the use of antidumping and countervailing duty laws.

Ms. Cannon has been involved in a wide range of trade matters and specializes in the injury phase of trade remedy actions before the U.S. International Trade Commission. She regularly appears before the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative and has participated in numerous oral arguments before the U.S. Court of International Trade and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Ms. Cannon has participated in implementing trade legislation and regulations. She has been involved in rules and dispute settlement issues before the World Trade Organization (WTO). She has also represented U.S. exporters charged with dumping in third countries.

101: How the ACC Value Challenge Affects Business Development – Michael Roster

For the past eight years, Michael Roster has been the steering committee co-chair of the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Value Challenge, a project that is promoting fundamental reforms in how law firms and in-house counsel serve clients. He formerly was managing partner of Morrison & Foerster’s Los Angeles office; co-chair of the firm’s Financial Services Practice Group worldwide, resident in both Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.; and a member of the firm’s policy committee.

In 1993, Roster was appointed general counsel of Stanford University, Stanford Medical Center and Stanford Management Company. He subsequently was executive vice president and general counsel of Golden West Financial Corporation. Roster also has served as outside director and vice chair of Silicon Valley Bank, chair of the Association of Corporate Counsel, chair of the Stanford Alumni Association, and chair of two start-up companies: Insert Therapeutics and Encirq. He also is a former director of the California Bankers Association, the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and Pasadena Heritage.

A graduate of Stanford University, Roster received his J.D. from Stanford Law School. He currently is a director of MDRC, a nonprofit corporation based in New York that evaluates the effectiveness of government and other programs affecting lower income families and individuals, and he recently chaired a project funded by two foundations to eliminate abuses in consumer credit cards in the U.S. He teaches Contract Drafting and Strategy at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.

John founded Finnegan’s 3D Printing Working Group and advises clients about how 3D printing may affect their businesses. John frequently speaks and writes on 3D printing and has been recognized as a thought leader in this space. 093: The Ethics of Business Development – Lucian Pera

Pera_Lucian2Lucian T. Pera is a partner with the Memphis, Tennessee office of Adams and Reese LLP. His practice includes civil trial work, including commercial litigation and media law, and he counsels and represents lawyers, law firms, and others on questions of legal ethics and the professional responsibility of lawyers. A Memphis native, he is an honors graduate of Princeton University and Vanderbilt University School of Law. He served for five years on the ABA “Ethics 2000” Commission, which rewrote the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. From 1995 through 2009, he led the Tennessee Bar Association Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. Under his leadership, the committee developed and successfully proposed to the Tennessee Supreme Court new legal ethics rules for Tennessee based on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. He has chaired the editorial board of the ABA/BNA Lawyers’ Manual on Professional Conduct, has served as president of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, and serves as a member of the Advisory Board for the Miller-Becker Institute for Professional Responsibility of the University of Akron. He is also the immediate past Treasurer of the American Bar Association, a former member of its Board of Governors and Executive Committee, and has served in the House of Delegates since 1990. He also serves as Vice President of the Tennessee Bar Association and will be its President in 2017.
